Today I was browsing and found a cool script (for Greasemonkey) that allows using Google Reader inside gmail (it is in Google Reader Redux). But, just for a change , I wanted it a little bit different, so I moded it. The changes I made were: added a link to ‘Stared Feeds’; allowed to show the news as full text (instead of the list view that was hard-coded); made the left border a little thicker to fit gmail interface). If you want to try it, click here.

UPDATE [2007-06-18]: Some changes in this script:

Change page title when showing feeds

Hide the next messages div if one exists

Ok, yesterday I played a little bit more with MediaPortal. I found out that it is possible to make the subtitles appear where I want, but this must be done in VobSub and it sucks if you have two monitors with different sizes (one wide and one normal). But at least it is possible.

About the DVD catalog, I found out that is possible to set a DVD number for a movie, but this has to be incremented in steps of 1 (ok, can be in steps of 10 too), what is not good. Besides, that info is already in the DVD name.. But I also found out a scripting language to run inside it :ninja: Lets see what happens in a couple of days…

In the last days I’ve played with a new (to me) program called MediaPortal. It tries to simulate an interative TV, allowing to browse through movies, pictures, music, etc with a cool interface an functions to get data from the internet. But I’ve got 3 problems with it (and then probabily won’t be fixed so soon, because people who speek english don’t use subtitles :S):

Since it retieves data for movies, tv series, controls what you’ve saw, etc, why it can’t download subtitles automatically?

It does not show subtitles by itself, but uses VobSub for that. The problem is that the subtitles are always over the movie, even when there is a black space bellow the movie (because I don’t have a widescreen TV, you know… ). The best player I’ve saw to handle it is bsplayer version 1. It puts the subtitles in the right place, allow changing t timing of subtitles during the movie, etc, etc.. It is a pitty that the version 2 is adware (or something like that).

I missed a way to control a collection of movies in different DVDs (with a lot of movies per DVD). It would be perfect if it had a way to do that easy, something like: it shows a list of all movies, you pick one and it says: ‘Insert the disk XYZ’.
PS: It would have an screen to load all data from a DVD
PS2: Since retrieving data takes a long time, it could do it in background

Ahh… dreams… Who knows, maybe someday i do it…

I must be getting old and jaded, because all of those currently ‘hot’ exciting developments completely fail to excite me. Be it AJAX or Web 2, file system as database or 3D desktops like Looking Glass, they all strike me as solutions looking for problems – and that’s on the good days. On my bad days I am convinced they are all part of a giant conspiracy backed by hardware manufacturers designed to waste as much processing power as possible on the most basic tasks, all in order to keep us spending our cash on unnecessary upgrades.

Seriously though, I think the idea of 3D desktop on 2D surface is by definition doomed to failure. Get back to me when we have true 3D displays…
